According to a report by Dan Woike of The Athletic, the Los Angeles Lakers are only open to acquiring expiring contracts in any potential deal involving LeBron James. While speaking on The Ringer’s “Zach Lowe Show,” Woike stated that the Lakers are prioritizing keeping their salary cap flexible past the 2025-26 season. Their long-term strategy is to keep financial options open in preparation for 2026 and 2027, when several elite players are expected to hit the free agency market.

“The Lakers have no interest in absorbing contracts that extend past this upcoming season,” Woike said on July 14. He emphasized that since LeBron James himself is on an expiring deal, the organization would prefer not to swap that for long-term salary commitments. “Where is the $54 million in expiring money that would make sense for them in return for James?” Woike asked rhetorically.

Despite the trade buzz, LeBron James has not publicly responded to rumors. Woike observed that James seemed fully engaged with the Lakers during their Summer League appearances, sitting alongside teammates and staff, showing no signs of tension or dissatisfaction with the organization. 

Even with trade speculation swirling, James avoided addressing it when approached by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “I ain’t got nothing to talk about,” James told him at the Summer League.

Trade discussions gained momentum after Rich Paul, James’ agent, suggested that his client is committed to competing for a championship in the upcoming season. Paul said that as James approaches the last stages of his career, they are determining what is best for him and that the Lakers organization is understanding and supportive of that objective.

Meanwhile, the Lakers appear to have their eyes set on a bigger prize: Slovenian superstar Luka Dončić. Multiple reports indicate that the franchise is prioritizing Dončić, who has a player option for the 2026-27 season and could hit free agency in 2026. ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported that Dončić is eligible for a four-year, $223 million extension, though he may opt for a shorter deal worth $160 million to maximize future earnings.
